NFL Post-Draft NFC East Power Rankings

1.  Philadelphia Eagles

While the Chiefs have the best all-around player at the most important position, the Eagles appear to be the best all-around team in the NFL right now. It’s a little bit hard to continue heaping praise on Howie Roseman when Jalen Carter fell to No. 9 in the draft for a reason. Yes, there have been some incredible instances of dealing around on the part of the GM, but had Carter not been arrested and charged in March with misdemeanor reckless driving and racing in connection to a crash that killed two members of the Georgia football program, he wouldn’t have made it out of the top three.

I suppose we can compliment Roseman for having the kind of veteran-laden roster that can enable him to take these types of calculated chances. The most enjoyable part of being an Eagles fan must be seeing the roster improving in waves. Carter and Nolan Smith will eventually take the place of the team’s current veterans, and every position has quality backups.

2. Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys reached right away for need with 4-3 run-stuffing nose tackle Smith in the first round. Schoonmaker, Vaughn and Brooks didn’t give them the offensive skill punch they needed. Overshown is their type of linebacker to complement Micah Parsons, and he and Smith save the class for immediate impact, on top of Fehoko’s own big defensive upside.

3. New York Giants

The Giants didn’t get many headlines for their draft haul, but they might have come out of the weekend with starters from their first three picks. Deonte Banks (selected 24th overall out of Maryland) makes sense as a starter across from Adoree’ Jackson at cornerback in Wink Martindale’s defense. Center John Michael Schmitz could be a second-round steal and should have the chance to be a Day 1 starter. Then there’s third-round pick and Tennessee product Jalin Hyatt, a wide receiver who gives the G-Men the vertical threat they lacked a season ago. The Giants expect Daniel Jones to continue to ascend in 2023 — well, one can only presume this, based on the size of his new contract — and this draft should help fuel that goal.

4. Washington Commanders

Emmanuel Forbes has freakish speed and put great play on film at Mississippi State, but taking him before Christian Gonzalez was more than surprising. Forbes is also 30 pounds lighter than Gonzalez, possibly pigeonholing him into a slot role at the next level. Forbes aside, I did like the addition of KJ Henry. A former five-star recruit, Henry turned things up a notch in his final season with a strong pass-rush grade from PFF on the back of 53 pressures. He’s a project, but not a bad bet in the fifth round.
